Meta’s Next Move: How WhatsApp is Redefining Group Calls with 32 Participants

WhatsApp has been diligently enhancing its calling features over the past few months. In July, the application expanded its group call capacity from seven participants to a more substantial 15, which was a notable improvement. Subsequently, Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, elevated the bar by integrating support for up to 32 participants if you opted to add more participants after commencing the call. Now, WhatsApp is working on enabling users to initiate a call with a full complement of 32 participants right from the outset.

In the most recent beta version of WhatsApp, version 2.23.19.16, WABetaInfo identified several subtle adjustments, particularly in the calls tab. Instead of displaying call links, the call screen now presents a simplified view, indicating who is available for a call. Additionally, the floating call button has been revamped to feature a plus icon, suggesting that call links may have been relocated there, although this is yet to be confirmed.

Concerning the maximum number of participants, initially, users were limited to selecting 14 contacts for a call in addition to themselves, which subsequently expanded to a 15-person limit as introduced in July. During that time, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, announced plans for supporting 32-person calls. However, beta testers who gained early access to 32-person groups found that they couldn’t commence a call with the full 32 participants. Instead, they could only invite 14 people initially, and the additional 17 participants could only be added after the call commenced. Now, beta testers will be able to invite up to 31 participants right at the start of a call.

This change is reflected in the updated call tab, which now prompts users to select up to 31 people instead of the previous 14. The update is currently rolling out through the Google Play beta program, although this program is presently at full capacity. Nevertheless, the APK can be sideloaded for those who were unable to enroll in the program. It’s important to note that the ability to initiate 32-person calls is currently exclusive to select beta testers and is linked to specific accounts. However, WABetaInfo reports that this feature is expected to become accessible to a broader user base in the near future.

The precise timeline for when this feature will exit the beta phase and become available in the stable release remains uncertain, and there is a possibility that it may undergo further changes or be removed. With WhatsApp being commonly utilized by businesses, families, and educational groups for simultaneous communication, this enhancement to the call feature is highly sought after. The capacity to host multi-person calls is a vital aspect of the service’s utility. Moreover, if Meta aims to position its app as a serious competitor to business-focused communication platforms like Slack and Zoom, the expansion of its call capabilities is an essential step forward.

Conclusion

In conclusion, WhatsApp’s recent efforts in enhancing its calling features, from expanding group call capacity to 32 participants to user-friendly interface adjustments, underscore its commitment to improving the user experience. While the precise timeline for the final release remains uncertain, these developments aim to solve the diverse user needs, especially in the business and educational sectors.
